Abstract

The author summarizes his article in this way: “’Gazeta Ludowa’ participated in two basic stages of shaping the modern national consciousness of Poles in Upper Silesia. In the first of them – until World War I – she strengthened their relationship with the Polish nation, land and Polish language, built in them a sense of identification and pride in the historical and cultural achievements of past generations of Poles, and influenced the creation of ties between the inhabitants of Silesia and Poles with other areas. On this canvas, she tried to create a new type of Pole: aware of her nationality, boldly and dynamically expressing her patriotism, actively participating in public life. The national consciousness of Poles thus formed in Upper Silesia was to fulfill two functions interconnected. It was to be a factor, on the one hand, that strengthens the resistance against Germanization, and on the other, develops the strength of the Polish nation by adding patriotism to it. From the second half of 1915, the National Democrats’ letter participated in the process of recreating the Polish state. In connection with this, it began the second stage of shaping national consciousness, during which the idea of Polish restitution and the concept of including the Upper Silesian land was disseminated among Poles in Upper Silesia. Practical actions were also undertaken in this direction”.
